Cynthia, her daughter Lisa and their housekeeper, Mabel P. D’Arcangelo had been waiting for more than two hours. The phone had been ringing off the hook. They had been getting a lot of calls but the call they had been waiting for was for the D’Arcangelo family. But the call never came, it was a mistake, it had to be. A mistake of some sort.
“What? What do you mean? It was a mistake!”
“We were all in the bedroom getting ready for bed, and Lisa was telling me that someone had just called, that they said it was a big mistake,” Cynthia explained.
“But that can’t be, that can’t be! I mean it’s been nearly two hours since we called,” Mabel said.
“Lisa said there was a man’s voice on the phone. She said that she had told them that we weren’t home but that they said that they’d call back,” Cynthia said. “That was the first we heard from them. We’ve been on the phone all this time. She was the one that made the mistake. That must be what happened.”
Cynthia was getting impatient. Lisa had already told them that the man who answered the phone said that they’d call back. They said that it was some sort of mistake. She thought it would be the cops. They had been calling the house all night long.
“They told her that it was a man, she told them that we weren’t home and they said they’d call back. They said that they were going to check the area and see if we were home. And then they asked her if we had any kids,” Cynthia said. “It wasn’t the police, it must have been somebody who wanted to harass us.”
Mabel nodded. “Maybe, maybe it was the police,” she said.
“Maybe we should have called them when we realized that the call wasn’t a mistake,” Lisa said. “We’ll call the police now,” she said.
“That’s what we should do,” Cynthia said.
But it wasn’t a police call that the D’Arcangelo family was about to receive, it was something far worse.
“We didn’t think it was anything bad. We thought maybe it was a friend,” Cynthia said.
They all waited in the living room, they were watching the late evening news on television. The phone rang again. Mabel answered it. The call was from an unidentified caller. The person who called wanted to speak to someone from the D’Arcangelo family.
“We’ve been getting a lot of calls since tonight. It’s been all day long,” Mabel said. “Some of the calls are from people who want to warn us about something, they want us to know that they’re watching us. They want to warn us and let us know that they know what we’re doing. Some of the calls are people who want us to know that they’re watching us. It’s almost like they want to warn us that they know what we’re up to,” Mabel said.
“What are we going to do? We’re going to go to bed, we’re going to sleep. We’re not going to answer any calls. This is probably some weirdo, we just want to sleep,” Lisa said.
“It’s too late to do anything else,” Cynthia said. “We’re just going to bed. Maybe it’s somebody who wants to know if we’re home, maybe it’s a friend. If it’s somebody who wants to warn us that they’re watching us, we don’t have to tell them where we are. That’s what they want, anyway. We’ll stay in the bedroom tonight, that’s where it’s quietest, that’s where we’ll be safest. I’m getting a chill just standing here talking about it, I’m cold,” Cynthia said.
They all went into the bedroom and tried to get to sleep. It didn’t work. They all slept in their underwear, in their pajamas. Their slippers were by the bed, on the floor.
“We’ve been getting a lot of calls since tonight, it’s almost been 24 hours,” Lisa said. “We’re all getting very nervous. I mean I want to be with my kids but I’m terrified of what’s happening. I don’t know what we’re going to find when we get out of the house,” Lisa said.
“I know I’m going to find my dog lying dead on the bed,” Mabel said. “We’re going to find the dog lying dead on the bed. We’re going to wake up and find the dog lying dead on the bed. We’re going to find the dog lying dead on the bed,” Mabel said.
The family all waited, they all knew they were being watched, they knew that they were being followed.
“We know what this is all about. This is a nightmare, a nightmare that we’re all going to wake up from in
